Windley's Technometria: Why Does Google Think I am in Spain?

  • Adam Curry · 1 year ago
Interesting, I've been seeing similar behaviour with google services on Opera Mini. From time to time google mobile will think I'm in norway, in a UK and multiple SF locations.

If I remember right, you can go into the Google settings, and assign a country profile.

The entire time I was in Ireland this summer, Google thought I was in Germany.

I also get undesired geolocation effects occasionally. You can set your homepage to google.com/webhp, which seems to make your settings follow you from country to country.

Try http://www.google.com/ncr. It won't fix everything, but it should keep you from being sent to google.es.

Google usually assumes -- correctly -- that I am in Hong Kong, but I can't get it to revert to English for more than one session. Apparently, they don't know that English is one of HK's official languages either.

Google is celebrating, for good reason. Here is the explanation:

Still happening to me, and it's November now. Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this?

I am having the exact same problem. Please email me. I am outside Philadelphia. My IP maps to Verizon in DC but Google thinks I am in Spain.
  • Dave · 1 year ago
Fixed! Called Verizon and asked them to assign me a new IP

it's december now and now it is hapenning to me. Did i download some sort of a virus?
  • Phil Windley · 1 year ago
I'm certain it's not a virus, but beyond that I don't know what causes it.
